About the Author Terry Bartelt is currently an Electromechanical Instructor at Fox Valley Technical College, with more than twenty five years teaching experience in the field. In addition, Mr. Bartelt's Electromechanical Technology Program was presented the Secretary of Education Award as one of the top ten community college programs in the country. In my opinion the book is worth it and contains good technical descriptions, however without mathematical explanation.

Illustrations are very helpful, especially if they are animated, so I loved the idea that a CD of videos was included. One note I would like to provide is that the included CD only contains a small fraction of the videos referenced throughout the book. I think a teachers version of the book might come with all the videos. But the good news is that I found all the referenced videos are available online for free at www. As an FYI to the publisher, future versions should include all referenced videos on the CD, or don't reference the video.

We can use a sensor that will produce a signal that is represented by a voltage range of 0 to 10 volts DC, with 0 feet being equal to 0VDC and feet being equal to 10VDC.

Analog signals are typically linear, so a 5VDC signal would tell us the tank level is at 50 feet. The analog signal could be wired into a PLC analog input module, and in the ladder program, we could compare the actual level to a setpoint and produce a discrete signal that would cause an output point to start a pump to raise or lower the level.

PLCs provide ideal isolation because its circuitry is divided into three main regions separated by isolation boundaries as shown below. When wiring a PLC , it is extremely important to avoid making external connections that connect logic side circuits to any other.
